When the few Westboro members who came to town failed to create a ruckus at Fayette Highschool today, they made their way across to Central Methodist University.
We are tempted to ask why, but asking questions assumes that there is a rational person to answer them. That is clearly lacking in this case.
Ultimately, looking at this picture, I feel sorry more than anything else. In their lostness, these people have rejected love of God and neighbor. As inevitably happens, the vacuum left behind yearns to be filled. But, unable to grasp love, they have confused love with attention. Now, they are even unable to gain the attention they seek. Can you imagine a person doing anything more in order to try to become the subject (or even the object) of another person’s attention? And, this is the result … a picture. Westboro protesters have become roadside attractions for curious onlookers, who stare as do those who are passing the shells of cars left from a previous wreck. It is hard to imagine a more vivid image of the simultaneously absurd and banal results of sin afflicting a human life.
